Illiteracy happens to be one of the major problems that the world wants to address today. For many people, to learn to read and write is an advantage that will give them better chances for success in their lives. Many jobs require that their employees know how to read and write, and those who did not manage to learn to read or write (primarily because the opportunity did not arise or because there were little to no resources that would help them keep up the reading habit) hardly ever get the same opportunities that their literate counterparts do. This is probably because most of the higher-paying, better-living jobs need a people who can follow written instructions or directions. People who did not learn to read and write are also sometimes considered to be stupid on the basis that they can be easily tricked with regards to secret documents – this is especially true if they happen to be ashamed of the fact that they did not learn to read and write.
